Your First Week with an Automatic Feeder: A Practical Setup Guide
A straightforward routine for placement, portion checks, scheduled meals and a gradual introduction.

Set up a new feeder while you are home and have time to watch it work. The aim is to make the new bowl and dispensing sound familiar before the feeder becomes part of your normal routine.
Start with the manual and a suitable location
Check the instructions for your exact model. Put it on a stable, dry surface where your pet can eat comfortably. Route the power cable away from chewing and pulling. Keep the dispensing opening clear, and do not place the unit where doors or furniture can knock it over.
Introduce one change at a time
Let your pet investigate the inactive feeder. Use familiar food and keep their usual feeding location where practical. Try a manual dispense while you are nearby. If the sound worries them, give them space and keep their familiar bowl available rather than forcing the introduction.
Check what one portion means
The number called a portion in an app is not necessarily a fixed number of grams for every food. Weigh several test dispenses using your usual kibble. Use the product instructions and your pet’s established feeding plan to set meals, allowing for food or treats given elsewhere.
Observe the first scheduled feeds
Confirm the device time, meal times and portion settings. Watch the first few scheduled feeds and check that food reaches the bowl. If there is more than one pet, observe who actually eats it. Two bowls alone do not stop one animal from eating both servings.
Build a quick daily check
- Inspect the food level and bowl.
- Check power and any relevant app alerts.
- Look for crumbs or obstructions around the outlet.
- Confirm that your pet is eating normally.
Before time away, arrange a person to check on your pets and know how to feed them manually. Remote viewing and automated meals are useful tools, but neither replaces that person.
