Introducing a New Pet Product Without Rushing

Help your pet explore a new bed, toy, feeder or litter product at their own pace.

Helping a cat explore a new pet bed

A new product can change more than one thing at once: a familiar location, a sound, a smell or the way your pet reaches their food or resting place. A gradual introduction gives you a chance to see what they are comfortable with.

Keep the familiar option available

Place the new item where it can be explored without blocking the old one. For a bed, allow a choice of resting places. For a feeder, keep the familiar bowl available during the introduction. For a litter product, avoid removing the established tray before the new arrangement is being used reliably.

Begin with the product switched off

If an item moves or makes noise, let your pet investigate it while inactive first. Start its simplest mode only when you can supervise. Give your pet a clear route away from it and avoid placing them inside or directly in front of a moving product to force an interaction.

Choose short, calm sessions

Keep the first sessions brief. Stop if the pet appears uncomfortable, and return to a simpler step later. Interest on day one does not mean an item should immediately be left running unattended. Check the manufacturer’s supervision instructions, especially for toys and automated litter products.

Check the fit as well as the reaction

  • Can your pet enter, exit or reach the item easily?
  • Does it stay stable during normal use?
  • Are cords and removable pieces safely positioned?
  • Is the selected model suitable for your pet’s size and age?

Let actual use guide the setup

Small adjustments to position may help more than repeatedly changing settings. Observe the normal routine over several days. If a product consistently goes unused, reconsider its fit and placement rather than assuming your pet needs to get used to it.
