Pet Water Fountain Care: A Simple Cleaning Routine
Keep track of water changes, removable parts, filters and the small areas that are easy to miss.

A fountain still needs fresh water and regular cleaning. A filter is one part of the system; it does not remove the need to wash surfaces or inspect the pump. Use your model’s manual for the cleaning method and frequency.
Make a daily visual check
Check the water level and look for hair, food and debris. Listen for a change in pump noise and watch the water flow. If anything seems wrong, switch off the fountain and investigate rather than letting it run with too little water.
Unplug before taking it apart
Disconnect power before cleaning. Separate only the components that the instructions identify as removable. Keep electrical connections dry, and never immerse parts that are not designed to be submerged.
Clean the places water passes through
Wash the reservoir, drinking surface and accessible channels using the method recommended for the material. Pay attention to corners and narrow passages. Rinse thoroughly so no cleaning residue remains. Do not assume every removable part is dishwasher-safe.
Include the pump and filter in the routine
Follow the manual for opening and cleaning the pump. A small build-up in an accessible inlet can affect flow. Fit the correct replacement filter and follow its preparation instructions. Replace it on the recommended schedule, or earlier when the instructions call for it; appearance alone does not establish that a filter is still effective.
Restart and watch
Reassemble the fountain, add the specified amount of fresh water and confirm normal flow. Check for leaks before leaving it running. Keep a separate bowl of fresh water available while the fountain is being cleaned or serviced.
How quickly a fountain gets dirty varies with use and the number of pets. Keep a short note of cleaning and filter changes so the routine is easy to repeat.
